In 1939, an unpresumptuous collection of verses appeared, penned by T.S. Eliot for his godchildren: Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. He had intended to write a companion piece for canines as well, so in celebration of the book's 80th anniversary, Eliot's estate and his publisher Faber & Faber asked former Faber poetry editor Christopher Reid to step in. As Reid opines: "I've rounded up a rowdy assembly / Of my own Consequential Dogs / As counterparts to Eliot's mogs. / … / I trust you'll take them as you find them / And, at the very least, not mind them." Witty and varied, they are accompanied by Elliot Elam's expressive two-color drawings.
