October, 1942: Young ferry pilot Jo Hardy rescues an American serviceman bound and gagged in a barn, then discovers that he is considered a suspect in the disappearance of a fellow soldier. Jo seeks the help of psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs, but in this 17th adventure (after The Consequences of Fear), Maisie is already busy.
