His surname was Paris but he came from Germany; he worked in the era of Art Deco, yet avoided the grace and elegance that was popular to focus on caricature and grotesqueries. Roland Paris worked in an astonishing range of media, and his style is instantly recognizable—so much so that his name is synonymous with décor that is weird or faintly supernatural.
