At age 12, Joe Johnson ran away from home, hopping a freight train at the height of the Great Depression. He talked his way into the U.S. Army two years later, and was sent to the Philippines. Joe and a teenage prostitute fell in love, but when the Japanese attacked in December 1941, their hopes of being together had to wait. After fighting in Bataan and Corregidor, Joe endured years of horror as a POW, and as Marcus Brotherton recounts here, it was love that inspired him to survive his ordeal.
