Although best known for creating such ships as Lusitania and the QE2, the Clydebank branch of Scotland's John Brown & Co. made a major contribution to fighting the Great War with its 1914-20 construction of warships, destroyers, submarines, and even a batch of war-standard merchant ships. Clydebank employed professional photographers to record the whole process of construction, and from this remarkable collection, 200 black and white photographs appear here, with aerial views of these massive projects, as well as a glimpse at their interiors. The text offers an in-depth look at the shipbuilding process and the industry itself, which—with many men away, fighting the war—finally introduced women into the workforce.
